Jim Faris

Jim Faris combines years of experience in the computing industry and
interactive media with extensive knowledge of visual design. He has a strong
track record of anticipating trends in design for technology and of creating
innovative new products with clients. In 1997, Jim Faris was chosen as one
of the I.D. Forty, I.D. Magazine's pick of "the most important design
innovators from the West Coast."
Jim speaks frequently at professional conferences in the U.S. and Europe.
including the Netherlands Design Institute and IIID's Vision Plus 4. He has
also taught graphic design in the United States, England and Germany. Jim
has contributed to numerous articles on interaction design which have
appeared in computer and design publications including The American Center
for Design Journal: interact, New Media, and interactions. His design work
has appeared in ID Magazine, Communication Arts and HOW, and at SIGGRAPH and
CHI.

Jim has taken on responsibility for helping shape and influence the design
practice and its role in the world. He initiated the Design Coalition, an
group of leading design firms that promote new standards, uniformity and
fairness in designers' business relationships with their clients and
vendors. He has also served as an advisor for the ACM interactions Awards
Committee. Currently, Jim is a member of the steering committee and a
founding member of the AIGA Advance for Design.
Formerly the founding Director of Graphic Design for The Museum of Modern
Art, New York, Jim was responsible for the design of the Museum's
promotional materials, advertising, signage and exhibition graphics. Prior
to joining The Museum of Modern Art, Jim was a Senior Designer at CIBA-GEIGY
Corporation (now Novartis), where he directed design for the Plastics and
Additives Division.
Jim received his BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He
continued his studies in the graduate program at the Kunstgewerbeschule in
Basel, Switzerland.
Jim's penchant for creating thought-provoking work began in 1979 when
"Tool, Process, Sensibility: Images of Typography in 26 Collages" was
published in the book "Projeckte/Projects" by Wolfgang Weingart, influencing
generations of designers. Currently Jim is working on a book called
"Adaptive Design."
