Muriel Cooper Prize
|
Two years ago, after we had spoken at a DMI Conference, Dan Boyarski took
me to St. John's University, Minnesota. While we were there, Dan
remembered starting his studies as a young man of 17 from the
Philippines, beginning a new life. He told me about a very special man in
his life, Joseph, his first graphic design teacher, who set him on the
path he continues on today. If we are very lucky in our lives, as Dan
was, we are given one great teacher who instructs us not only in a
subject, but in ourselves. Dan is one of these.
He is an irresistible catalyst with inexhaustible energy and an
irrepressible passion. Over the past 22 years, since I met Dan in Basel, I
have learned from watching him live his life, giving from an enormously
generous spirit. It is one thing to teach the familiar, another thing
entirely to teach what is emerging, as only a pioneer can do. As Dan is in
design and new media. This morning Dan said, "I just notice things." But
he does far more than notice. Through his teaching, writing and speaking,
his research and consulting, he continues to guide us, offering us
insights into how we are designing ourselves.
Dan is a leader and an inspiration, not only for his students, but also
for his colleagues; those of us who are teaching, and those of us
practicing, and I gratefully count myself as one. For me, the honor of
receiving the first Muriel Prize has been more than doubled in the
sharing of it with Dan.
Please join me in congratulating Dan Boyarski....
